Basic Ultrasound Course in Fetal Biometry & Doppler

  21 October - 23 October 2014 

This is a three day course aimed at clinicians (obstetricians), midwives and sonographers wishing to undertake training in obstetric ultrasound, or who are already in training or practice. This will provide SHOs/Registrars with skills that fulfil key theoretical and practical aspects of the RCOG basic training log book requirements.

Aims of the Course

The course has a very strong practical hands-on component in addition to enabling participants to understand the principles of pregnancy dating and fetal growth assessment. A basic introduction to other aspects of fetal surveillance will also be covered.

Course Outline

    The Dating Scan

    This will cover basic ultrasound controls and physics, assessment of fetal viability, pregnancy dating and common incidental gynaecological problems in the first trimester. Small group hands-on sessions will enable practical skills acquisition on accurate first trimester dating and viability assessment. BPD assessment is also covered.

    Dating and Growth Scan

    Additional practical hands-on sessions to consolidate skills acquired on Day 1, and introduce later fetal biometry. In addition to course participants practicing first trimester scans they will learn skills in pregnancy dating and growth assessment in 2nd and 3rd trimesters, including multple pregnancy scanning.

    Fetal Growth and Wellbeing

    Concentrating on assessment of fetal growth and the recognition and management of growth disorders. Hands-on sessions will cover measurement of fetal biometric parameters including assessment of liquor volume and the placenta. Will also introduce participants to high risk pregnancy assessment – Fetal & Maternal Doppler assessment and further hands-on work covering Umbilical Artery Doppler, Fetal Biophysical Profile assessment, as well as opportunities for revision of previous sessions and optional assessment (OSATS on Fetal Wellbeing Assessment).
